Leadership, Culture & Workforce Development

Leadership

Leaders set the playing field for how exposure will be tolerated and responded to at the sharp end of operations. The priorities held by leaders – explicit and implicit – and the ways they are communicated, form the signals to workers about how they should manage themselves when they are making ‘in the moment’ trade-off decisions.
Reliable and high-quality work can only happen when workers interpret consistent messaging about how they should make trade-off decisions that effectively balance physical risk and production.

To help clients develop a high-functioning operating environment, Power Safety offers mentoring, coaching and education in key areas of strategic leadership and day-to-day management:

Executive leader mentoring

  • Vision clarity and articulation
  • Key message communication
  • Evidence-based risk governance
  • Risk tolerance alignment
  • Employee engagement
  • Field workforce impact

Operational leader education / coaching

  • Evidence-based risk awareness
  • Managing upward
  • Critical risk management strategies
  • Leadership team alignment
  • Appreciative enquiry at the frontline
  • Human performance reliability
  • Facilitating continuous improvement
  • Learning from unplanned outcomes

Culture Development

Our skill is in synthesizing several data sets into clear and accurate findings about the operating culture and identifying the key levers for improvement – for short-term containment and long-term sustainability.

Most of our clients are interested in validating or informing their operating strategy, particularly when existing initiatives aren’t getting the desired traction.

Types of data we collect, analyse, and then develop improvement strategies include:

  • The view from the top – what executives consider important and how they go about reinforcing their priorities and accountability
  • The nature of governance, its structure and focus, and whether there is clarity about the nature of work actually done vs work as planned
  • Workforce perspective on how effective operational leaders are with their people as the translators of organisational strategy into day to day operating objectives
  • Incident data and the management system for converting unplanned events into actionable learning that reduces the risk of repetition
  • Frontline worker clarity about organisational priorities, and their confidence to make consistent judgement calls when completing high risk tasks
  • Safety management system elements and how they integrate and support the organisation’s operational reliability goals
  • The level of support that all levels experience from one and two-up leaders to make (often) hard decisions in the face of ambiguity and stress
  • The quality of senior and operational leader engagement at the frontline, in terms of risk management and resolution of challenges in a fast-changing environment

Frontline Team Development

Since frontline workers and their team leaders are generally at the sharp end of an organisation’s physical exposure, we believe they should be completely supported to manage their own exposure in the face of ever-changing risk conditions.

This means appropriate levels of authority to make decisions in the moment; effective tools to help identify and analyse workplace exposure problems; simplification and de-cluttering of compliance-related processes; and unwavering support from leaders to drive the improvements that are recommended by the people who generally know best.

Power Safety offers customised programs to address:

  • Critical risk identification & mitigation
  • Leveraging pre-starts, toolboxes, and shift-handovers
  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Team exposure problem solving
  • Getting exposure challenges addressed
  • Identifying and handling internal hazards
